Pro Hockey Development Group is proud to announce that our U14 Elite Girls team player Abigail Lewis has been awarded the 2015 Canada Drives Athletic Sponsorship Grant.
Thirteen year old Abigail Lewis has been selected to be the recipient of a Canada Drives grant to attend the 2015 World Series Invitational for the U14 Girls tournament in Italy this May. The tournament is comprised of a diverse selection of highly skilled youth from different countries around the globe, all of whom have a strong desire to play competitive hockey while enjoying an inter-cultural experience.
The annual WSI tournament is invite-only, and hosts three female age divisions alongside four male ones. The country that hosts the tournament varies from year-to-year amongst European countries such as Hungary, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, and Italy. The try-outs for WSI are rigorous and designed to attract skilled youth who are interested in competing in a high-level atmosphere. Lewis was recruited in 2014 after WIS tryouts by Coach Dania Simmonds who was impressed by Lewis’ “speed and strong hockey technique” she says. Almost immediately after tryouts, Lewis learned that she had been selected to attend the tournament in Italy. “I smiled the whole car ride home” she says.
Abby started playing hockey at the early age of five years old. Since then, her love for the sport has only continued to grow. She currently plays on two league teams, and is trying out for the hockey program at her school next week. Throughout Lewis’ athletic career she has been able to travel North America to places such as Boston, Quebec City, and Vermont, in tournaments and hockey camps. However, the WSI tournament will be Lewis’ first time travelling abroad to Europe. When asked what she is most excited for in going to Italy, Lewis exclaims while smiling “I’m excited to be playing higher level, fast paced hockey… but I’m also excited to try the food in Italy”.
“Our company definitely sees Canada as a hockey nation” says Canada Drives VP advertising Cody Green. “In the case of sending Abby Lewis to Italy, we are granted the opportunity to practice community investment in a manner that helps strengthen that portrayal, while simultaneously providing her the chance to develop and hone new athletic skills.”
